Prom Taking Kids From Grundgy To Glamorous

This past weekend was the big event for all the spending. We have a tradition in our school district of a little thing called the "Prom Walk". It is, to me, one of the neatest traditions in our town.

Prior to moving here, I had never heard of a Prom Walk. Each and every year since moving in, I have learned to enjoy it more and more. Especially as the kids doing the Prom Walk are mine. Or the ones I have seen grow up here - my almost children.

Prom Walk, for those in communities without one, is a long event, where the participants drive up to the red carpet. The couple hand an announcer a card with their info on it. When they are announced, the young man escorts his date down the red carpet. Where parents like me are lined up on both sides with cameras and video tape. Everyone claps and cheers.

The Prom Walk is a huge process and many come out for it. Not just those with kids walking, but many in the community come to see.

For the boys, fathers and men it is all about the ride. What car, truck or contraption will bring up the next load of walkers to the red carpet. I can actually see my DH vibrate to the sound of the 69' Camaro's that make there way up. There is everything from a Limo to a Hummer, Pick-ups to old time classics.

Without the cars, I doubt the community men would come. :-)

For me, and I assume many mothers, it is about seeing those kids you love grow and blossom into beautiful and, maybe for the first time, groomed adults. There is never a moment, prior to Prom time, when the girls look so much like princesses and the boys like GQ. **imagine my kids blank stare when I say "GQ"**

Although, nothing involving kids is without a Gasp.

Some of the dresses these young teen age girls wore, had me vocally making sounds of shock.

NOT MINE - FYI. She was beautiful and a bit more on the conservative side. Same with my son's date - classy is how I would describe her.

There were a couple girls, I wonder how they got out of the house, past dad. To me, sexy is not showing it all. In fact, it works the opposite. There were a few I just said a small prayer for, that their breast didn't pop out, or their bottoms didn't fly up to far in the wind. And frankly there is nothing at all sexy, about a girl that has to keep reaching down and pulling down the center part of her dress for fear parts are showing. Nor, the one that keeps adjusting the thin straps over her breasts so that she is covered.

In the end, it was a good night. No drinking and driving. No hospital visits or funerals (for this) to attend.

I didn't sleep at all, because I am a worrier.

That sounds like such a neat idea. I wish we had had it when I went to prom. All we had was a lock-in after the prom at our school. They had food, games, movies, and other activities to keep us entertained from midnight until 7 or so. It was fun, but started getting boring after a few hours.

That is so cool! I wish my school had that too... I guess there was a lot of us though so it probably would've taken hours.
I know what you mean about the dresses too. They can get scary sometimes... I wouldn't be caught dead in some of the dresses these girls are willing to wear!
